Bruce Agness will have flags at the park directing you to our designated camping area. Pace Bend Park  offers 20 improved campsites, with water and electrical hook-ups, showers and restrooms. These sites are all located on the east side of the park just above Levi Cove, within easy walking distance to the lake. They feature plenty of shade trees and flat, grassy areas for tent camping. All sites are back-ins only. Each Den should pick a camping area within walking distance to Levi Cove (don't forget your den flags! ).  There are several open areas as well as areas under trees to camp.  Please watch out for cactus.

Pace Bend Park only a 45 to 50 minute drive from downtown Austin.  So if you are not a camper, and just want to come from the Activities Saturday evening, you should be able to make it home by 9:30 pm.

Pace Bend Park is located in far western Travis County in the Hill Country of central Texas. With more than nine miles of shoreline along scenic Lake Travis, Pace Bend is one of the most popular areas in the Highland Lakes region, offering visitors a wide range of recreational opportunities. The west side of the park features high, limestone cliffs and numerous rocky coves with some of the most impressive views available of Lake Travis, especially at sunset.

Most of Pace Bend Park is easily accessible by vehicle from the seven-mile, paved roadway that loops the park. However, the interior of the park is managed as a wildlife preserve and can be reached by foot, bicycle, or horseback only. Numerous trails lead into the hills and provide excellent views of the lake and the Hill Country. This area serves as home to a large number of whitetail deer, raccoon, fox, ringtail cat, and dozens of bird species.

Pay phones are located at the Collier Cove boat ramp and at the park entrance station. Potable water is available opposite the Tatum Cove boat ramp. Dogs and other pets are permitted in the park and are allowed off-leash, but must be kept under your direct supervision and control. Dogs that become a nuisance or a hazard to other park visitors must be restrained. Glass containers and fireworks are prohibited in all Travis County Parks

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the boys need any particular type of tents,  sleeping bags, etc.?  Should they be in two man tents, or one large tent or some other arrangement?  Do the boys typically just bring a sleeping bag and pad to sleep with?
Our designated camping areas can hold multiple tents and gear.  You can have any type of tent you would like.  Of course this is a family campout, so if you want your whole family to come and sleep in
one tent, it should be large enough to accommodate everyone.  Yes, the scouts can sleep in their own tents, although please use discretion with younger scouts.  I would suggest at a minimum a sleeping bag and some sort of pad.  Texas dirt has a great deal of rock in it!

Do the boys handle their own mess kits, and dunk bags or does the den put together their utensils?
Each Den is responsible for its own food and cooking/cleaning. Your den leader should coordinate who is going to bring what.  Since Pack 39 does not have a chuck wagon, we cannot supply cleaning supplies, food, or utensils.  We have explored doing so, but to date have not been able to secure one at a reasonable price.  It would make life much easier on camp outs for sure.

Can we cook on a fire?
Yes, if there are spits available.

Can we even light a ground fire?
Ground fires are permitted, as seasonal conditions allow. However, the cutting or gathering of firewood, including kindling, is prohibited in all Travis County Parks. Firewood may be purchased at the park entrance station (when available) or from local businesses just outside the park.

Do we bring our wood,  or can we gather it?
It is always a good idea to bring your own wood.  At most camp sites in Texas, they do not want you to use the ground wood for fires.

Can we use charcoal or only propane stoves?
Yes, in designated cooking areas or spits. You are allowed to use a camping stove (propane / kerosene) or have a fire that is raised off the ground.
